Visual Storytelling At Its Best Told Through an Infographic

Target posted their First Quarter Earnings this week to their Online Newsroom with the use of an infographic to illustrate their report - a unique practice in the Investor Relations world. While hard numbers are an excellent source to present your info, an image or video, in this case an infographic, is a much more engaging method to tell the story visually to journalists and site visitors. USA Today is an expert at posting infographics that tell a compelling story while catching the eyes. Here’s one they did for the recent Mayweather-Pacquiao fight that compared complex financial numbers on the total purse for the event. While most of the folks who read this blog are engaged everyday in the mud of Public Relations and Marketing, we can’t ignore our friends across the aisle in Investor Relations. They have a tough task of meeting SEC guidelines every time they post online, distribute a press release, or open their mouths at a conference. So when an IR team incorporates an impactful and effective method of reporting Earnings, we should take notice.

The point being, Target is teaching a good lesson that you can take something as detailed (and somewhat boring) as an Earnings Report and make it pop for your audience. I’ve always said an image and video are a must these days, but when those aren’t possible, an infographic can tell a powerful story.
