It’s always a pleasure to share PR strategies and trends with other PR professionals, and I had the privilege yesterday of speaking at this year's PRSA Travel & Tourism Conference in Columbus, Ohio. I'm surrounded by the best and brightest PR minds in the travel and tourism industry from all over the country and hearing their ideas, while sharing some of mine, is a real treat.
After enjoying animal expert Jack Hannah's presentation, the famous TV personality and Director of the Columbus Zoo, I spoke to the group about the value of Twitter, the increased use of mobile devices by PR professionals and journalists to digest info, and what they ultimately could do to improve their stake in that arena. Here are some of the highlights:
- By 2014, Mobile devices will become the most common tool for accessing the internet
- Internet usage will double, that's right, double, by 2015
- In the US alone, there are 98 million smartphone service subscribers, which is 42% of all mobile users
- According to Social Media Reality Check, 76% of Corporate Communicators used Twitter in 2011, a two-fold increase from 2009
- Twitter is second only to Facebook as the most used Social Media platform by PR pr
What does this all mean to us as PR professionals? Simply put, we've got to: 1) Make sure our websites online newsrooms are mobile friendly and mobile optimized so our audiences can easily find our information; and 2) Integrate Social Media into every aspect of our daily PR strategies.
